March AMM Pulse: Healthy Habits in Bloom
March 27, 2025
Dear Friend,

We are excited to share some news about a recent grant AMM received from the William R. Kenan Jr. Charitable Trust. The grant will fund a program providing continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) and medical support to AMM‘s most high-risk patients who have diabetes. AMM will be able to provide patients with the needed training and support for using the CGM and advanced diabetes care management from our team. By using the CGM, patients will receive immediate feedback on their blood sugar levels and learn how diet and activity impact their self-management of diabetes. It will allow AMM providers to make real time adjustments to patient medications based on their readings provided by the CGM.

CGMs are expensive and not affordable for both AMM and our patients. This grant will help support our most at-risk patients and provide them with the skills and knowledge to combat their diabetes. AMM prides itself on being a data-driven organization, and this is a great example of how we use data to improve health outcomes.

We are grateful to the William R. Keenan Jr. Charitable Trust for their life-saving and life-changing support. The impact will be felt by our patients but also downstream – by their children, families and community.

As always, thank you for your support and for recognizing the work AMM is doing for Wake County's most vulnerable populations.

Sincerely,

Pete Tannenbaum,
AMM Executive Director
"I have learned that there is always people out there making a difference in the community even amidst difficulties and barriers. AMM inspires and motivates me to apply my future studies and career towards something greater and share that endeavor to those around me. I think it's been an honor to be able to witness this firsthand."

AMM participated in the Black Family Wellness Expo to provide knowledge and resources for the black community.

At the event, providers offered free screenings to the community. These screenings included blood pressure, cancer, cholesterol, hearing, speech, mental health, and heart health. AMM's Dr. Burkett participated in a panel and discussed primary health, specifically for black men.

This event also offered interviews, career/job training, and employment opportunities for qualified candidates.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup loosely packed carrot tops
  • 1 ½ cup tightly packed basil leaves
  • ⅓ cup pine nuts (sub pistachios or walnuts)
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 2 medium cloves garlic, peeled
  • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 1-2 tbsp water
Instructions:
  • Remove the carrot greens from a bunch of carrots, rinse them, and choose the freshest looking greens.
  • Add all your pesto ingredients except the water to a food processor (or small blender) and process until it's broken down into a chunky mixture. Add water 1 tablespoon (15 ml) at a time until creamy and dippable, keeping in mind water will dilute the flavor, so avoid adding too much (we used 2 tablespoons total).
  • Taste and adjust as needed, adding more olive oil for richness, lemon juice for brightness, basil if too thin, or water to reach desired consistency.
  • Enjoy with roasted carrots, potatoes, pasta, and more! Leftover pesto will keep stored in the refrigerator for 4-5 days, but will lose some of its bright green color.

This recipe is from the Minimalist Baker.

April is Physical Fitness Month at AMM! Physical exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle, and according to the CDC, the average adult should get at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity every day. At AMM there are a few different fitness programs offered to patients. Every week, there are Zumba and yoga classes, and in the spring, patients start a new wellness challenge! In the past, other fitness options have been offered as well, such as strength training and Walk with a Doc.
