January AMM Pulse:
January 30, 2025
Dear Friend,

What an extraordinary year 2024 was for Alliance Medical Ministry!  AMM patients thank you from the bottom of their hearts.

Your contributions have directly supported our mission - "to provide access to compassionate, whole-person primary care for working, uninsured adults." You have not merely provided funds; you have gifted health, strength, and dignity to individuals who otherwise might have been left on the sidelines of our healthcare system.

And yet, while we are filled with gratitude for this past year’s success, we look ahead. We envision a Wake County where health disparities are a thing of the past, and quality healthcare is accessible to all, regardless of their insurance status.

We are excited about what the future holds. The journey we have embarked on is challenging, but together, we have the potential to turn our vision into reality.

Thank you once again for your unwavering support.

February is recognized as American Heart Month, and is an opportunity to spread awareness regarding heart disease prevention. The United States commemorates the 61st annual American Heart Month in February. President Lyndon B. Johnson, a heart attack survivor, originally declared this in 1964. The American Heart Association's Go Red for Women initiative will celebrate its eleventh anniversary on National Wear Red Day in 2025. Wearing red on this day helps spread the word about heart disease and motivates people to lead healthy lives. Both initiatives help spread the message of heart disease prevention as heart disease is the leading cause of death for women and men in America.

Alliance Medical Ministry, a 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to providing accessible healthcare services to uninsured adults with chronic disease in Wake County, is proud to initiate an important clinical study focusing on a key cardiovascular risk factor which has played a role in cardiovascular health disparities in minority populations. AMM is the first free and charitable clinic in N.C. to offer this kind of access for underserved populations. As a partner with SiteBridge Research Inc. AMM will conduct a Phase 3study evaluating the efficacy and safety of a treatment for patients with elevated lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] levels, now a recognized risk factor with familial impact on atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD).

Alliance Medical Ministry’s mission for the last 22 years has been to serve those most in need, ensuring that individuals have access to high-quality primary healthcare, regardless of their ability to pay. This mission aligns with the study goals, seeking to address the disproportionate impact of cardiovascular disease on US Black/African American and Hispanic populations through screening and treatment. Dr Edwin Burkett, a Board-Certified Family Medicine physician, serves the AMM community both as Medical Director and community thought-leader supporting vulnerable populations in Wake County.  He draws on decades of experience in Family Medicine, collaborating with hospitals, other local physicians and SiteBridge Research to expand access to healthcare.

It's been a chilly January, but that hasn't stopped us from providing fresh produce for our patients! Though our garden is operating at a limited capacity, there are still some green spots to notice. In the hoop house (a plastic, greenhouse-like structure that stays naturally warm by sunlight), we are still growing arugula and spinach. Additionally, a few garden rows are covered in a lush blanket of clover. This is crimson clover- a winter cover crop that grows throughout the cool season and blooms in the Spring. It provides a nice groundcover in these freezing temperatures, and will offer plant-available nitrogen for the crops we will plant in those spots in May.
