Meet AMM'S Public Health Intern, Karen!

AMM serves as a learning hub, offering educational opportunities for students across various fields. Every year, AMM welcomes interns in Public Health, Social Work, and Counseling, while also hosting medical students and more! Karen is a graduate of Meredith College with a B.S. in Biology.

Why did you choose public health?

I chose this public health internship because I am striving towards using data and analytics to improve healthcare outcomes. My background in biology gave me a foundation in understanding health sciences, but I wanted to apply that knowledge to a broader population level. This relationship helps me better understand the real-world issues providers face.

Why did you choose AMM?

I chose AMM because as a non-profit organization, they face unique challenges in order to provide a wide range of health services to the community. Interestingly, when we first moved to the area, my mom was a patient at this clinic to see a cardiologist (she has had heart disease since the age of 30). She would bring me during her visits when I was 4 years old; this was 19 years ago. AMM's mission and values resonate with my long-term goal of working in health analytics to enhance healthcare accessibility and efficiency.

What do you do as part of your internship?

At my internship, I focus on population health interventions to improve health outcomes by enhancing the workflow of CareGap. I also work with the Electronic Medical Records (EPIC) to assist the clinical research program as needed. Additionally, I support education initiatives by helping with monthly health topics and awareness efforts. Through this role, I am gaining valuable experience and knowledge about past and current public health policies and their societal impact.

What have you learned during your internship at AMM?

I have learned that there is always people out there making a difference in the community even amidst difficulties and barriers. AMM inspires and motivates me to apply my future studies and career towards something greater and share that endeavor with those around me. I didn't realize how much work and problem-solving it requires in order to close the health gaps in today's society. I think it's been an honor to be able to witness this firsthand.

What are your plans for the future?

My goal is to specialize in health analytics, combining my background in biology with advanced data analysis to improve healthcare systems. I plan to continue refining my statistical and analytical skills and possibly pursue roles in healthcare consulting, epidemiology, or health policy analysis. Ultimately, I want to contribute to making healthcare more efficient and equitable through data-driven solutions.
