Dr. Edwin K. Burkett
Medical Director
Dr. Edwin K. Burkett (Colonel, USAF, Ret) grew up in California, but has travelled considerably, both nationally and internationally, in his impressive 35-year career in the United States Air Force. Dr. Burkett was an Air Force Family Physician, Flight Surgeon, and International Health Specialist. In his final Air Force assignment he served as the Director for the Defense Institute for Medical Operations.
Ever since he was young, Dr. Burkett wanted to be a doctor and to serve his country in the military. He earned Bachelor’s degrees in Spanish and Biology from Washington University in St. Louis in 1986 and an M.D. from the Uniformed Services University (USU) in 1991. He then went on to complete his Family Medicine residency at Malcolm Grow USAF Medical Center, and earned an MBA in Strategic Leadership at Western Governor’s University. He is board certified in Family Medicine.
Dr. Burkett came on staff at AMM in June 2021 and continues to practice as a Family Physician here, while also taking on a leadership role as Medical Director. He enjoys taking care of people of all ages, and especially working with underserved populations. Dr. Burkett continues to hold appointment as Associate Professor in the Global Health Division in the Department of Preventive Medicine and Biostatistics at USU. He also remains the course director for USU’s Medical Anthropology, teaching it annually via distance learning. Outside of work, Dr. Burkett has participated in multiple health engagement missions including in Zimbabwe and El Salvador and planned and led missions in Honduras and Haiti.
Dr. Burkett loves spending time with his wife Lisa and their three sons Dominic, Harrison, and Alexander. He is passionate about his faith and his family, and in his free time enjoys jogging, karate, reading, and both watching and playing football.
