Dr. Toby James, Psy.D., M.Div., CFBPPC
Director of Pastoral Care & Counseling
Dr. Toby James serves as the Director of Pastoral Care and Counseling at Alliance. In a confidential, compassionate, and nonjudgmental environment, he journeys with our patients to explore their emotional, mental, and/or spiritual concerns. He believes all persons are of sacred worth, and he works with our patients to empower them to build upon their strengths toward the personal growth and wellbeing they seek. He approaches psychotherapy from a psychodynamic and psychoanalytic perspective and is respectful the values, spirituality, and personal philosophy of each person. Those interested may explore with him the ways their faith lives inform their experiences.
Prior to arriving at Alliance, he served as a chaplain resident at WakeMed Health and Hospitals. He earned a Bachelors of Arts in Philosophy and Management from Eckerd College in 1996, a JD/MBA from Stetson University in 1999, a Masters of Divinity from Duke Divinity School in 2010, and a PsyD from the Graduate Theological Foundation in 2016. He is ordained as a deacon in the United Methodist Church and certified by the North Carolina State Board of Examiners as a Practicing Pastoral Counselor.
